College of Applied Sciences


College of Applied Sciences of Beijing University of Technology (BJUT), as one of the members of secondary schools of BJUT, was set up in January 2000 and took powerful and proud steps to promote BJUT to fully develop in covering multi-subjects, mainly majoring in Engineering, and combining Science and Engineering, Economics and Management, Art and Law, with the trend of colleges and universities’ reform development.

The history of College of Applied Sciences was traced back to the Department of Mathematics and Physics which was set up in the very beginning of building BJUT in 1960. The department made remarkable contributions to BJUT’s development by struggling for promoting the development of subject, trying its’ best to run high-level mathematics and physics course, and implementing academic research activities. Then, in 1978, a decision was made by BJUT to establish the Department of Applied Physics and the Department of Applied Mathematics, based on the Department of Mathematics and Physics, in order to reform the distribution of department. Since 1997, in need of the development of economic society, BJUT made the overwhelming adjustment and reorganization in structure to all subjects and majors in accordance with talents training aim of college, and then built and improved University-college administrative mechanism, finally established 15 secondary schools, one of which was College of Applied Sciences. Economics and Management of Beijing Union University and College of Computing of Beijing joined in BJUT respectively in 1990 and 1993. After that, mathematics teacher and physics teacher became the member of teaching staff of College of Applied Sciences.

The construction of College of Applied Sciences has already come to a considerable scale under the leadership of the Party Committee and Administration of BJUT, tightly corresponding with the development of BJUT, construction assignment of “211 Project” and construction goal of society, economics, culture in Beijing. College of Applied Sciences also gets marked accomplishments, such as promoting subject construction and team construction, deepening education and teaching reformation, upgrading the level of scientific research, and cultivating a large number of high-level science talents and applied-oriented talents.

Boosting specialist knowledge of subject

College is made up of four subjects, that is, mathematics, statistics, physics and optical engineering. Mathematics subject has first category post-doctoral program and first category doctoral program, and consists of basic mathematics, computational mathematics, probability theory and mathematical statistics, applied mathematics, and operational research and cybernetics. Statistics subject has first category doctoral program and first category post-doctoral program, and mainly researches on biostatistics. Physics subject has post-doctoral program and first category doctoral degree program, and mainly consists of optics, condensed state physics, theoretical physics etc. Optical engineering subject is one of the state key disciplines; condensed state physics is one of the key disciplines of Beijing; probability theory and mathematical statics and applied mathematics are both one of the key construction disciplines of Beijing. Chinese Association for Applied Statistics (CAAS), a first-grade state association, is attached to College of Applied Sciences. There are two undergraduate programs in the college: information and computational science, applied physics. Both are accredited as brand programs of Beijing.

Carrying Forward the Faculties Construction

The scientific research in the college involves various fields of mathematics and physics. Mathematical research areas range from pure mathematics to applied mathematics, including algebra, complex analysis, functional analysis, geometry and topology, wavelet, PDE and ODE, probability and statistics, biomathematics, operation research, fuzzy mathematics, information theory and computational mathematics; Physics research areas include cosmology, particle physics, string theory, ultrafast optics and ultrashort laser pulse, optic information storage and optic communication, nanophysics and film materials, light scattering, condensed matter physics,quantum information, computational physics. Currently, the college has nearly 150 staffs, including 19 doctoral advisers, 28 professors, 46 associate professors. Some of them have organized as a municipal scholar innovation team, which is well-structured. Many of the professors are well-known domestically and internationally, enjoying special government allowance from the State Council. In spite of that, many of them are members selected for New Century Talents Project, New Century Talent Supporting Project by education ministry, scholar innovation talent of Beijing province, etc.

Doing Research Activity

The large-scaled mathematics research laboratories, Physical fundamental and professional laboratories and the strong faculty endows the college both good software and hardware developing environment. In recent years, the college has undertaken more than 100 research projects from ‘863 Project’, ‘973 Project’ and National Natural Science Fund, etc. It also has won more than 30 awards like Second prize of science and technology award of Beijing, Second prize of research achievement of Beijing Universities, to name but few. The teachers have obtained more than 10 patents for invention and published hundreds of thesis on scholar periodicals. What’s more, the college has established extensive corporations and academic relations with United States, Europe, Japan, Canada, Australia, Russia and many other countries.

Improving Quality of Teaching

The College endeavors to improve the quality of education by following modern education theory. In spite of cultivating high-leveled undergraduates and postgraduates, the college also plays a significant role in taking basic socializing course of the whole university. Till now, there are 4 municipally outstanding teachers serving at the college, running 1 nationally excellent course, 6 municipally excellent courses, and 4 university-wide excellent courses. The teachers have organized into 2 municipally superexcellent teaching teams which winning first and second prizes of Beijing teaching competitions, composed 6 municipally high quality textbooks.

Currently, all the teachers and students of the college are looking forward to more brilliant success in both education and research in the future with their full passion.
