In 1961, Beijing Civil Engineering and Architecture College was incorporated into Beijing University of Technology and renamed as Department of Civil Engineering and Architecture, which included a teaching and research section of architecture. In 1980, the department formally recruited undergraduate students majoring in architecture with a 5-year educational system. In 1988, the Department of Architecture was founded. In 1996, Architectural Design and Theory was approved as a master-degree authorized discipline. In1998, College of Civil Engineering and Architecture was founded consisting of Department of Architecture, Department of Civil Engineering, Heating Ventilation & Air-Conditioning discipline and Institute of Architectural Survey and Design.
In April 2003, College of Architecture and Urban Planning (referred as CAUP hereafter) was established. At present, the college consists of three departments, including Department of Architecture, Department of Urban Planning and Department of Industrial Design. It also has seven research institutes, including Architecture & Urban Design Research Institute, Urban & Rural Planning and Design Institute, Architecture and Urban Environmental Technology Research Institute, Historical & Cultural Heritage Conservation Research Institute, Building and Urban Disaster Prevention & Reduction Research Institute, Public Art & Landscape Design Research Institute and Industrial Product Design Research Institute. Apart from that, it has an Architectural Design firm of top qualifications. Meanwhile, the college is affiliated with three national committees, i.e. China’s Urban Safety and Disaster Prevention Planning Academic Committee, Education and Training Committee of China Illuminating Engineering Society, and National Urban Earthquake Disaster Prevention Planning Review Committee.
In 1996, CAUP was authorized to confer master degree in Architectural Design and Theories. The discipline of architecture successfully passed National Higher Education Evaluation in 1998, 2002 & 2006 respectively. In 2003, CAUP was authorized to confer master degree in Urban Planning and Design. In 2008, the discipline of architecture was approved as one of the special disciplines in universities of Beijing. Under the approval of Beijing Municipal Education Committee, CAUP together with Beijing Institute of Architecture Design established the first talent off-campus training base. In 2009, the college was permitted to build up an innovation trial zone for talent training in Beijing’s universities (Innovation trial zone for comprehensive application-oriented talent training model). Meanwhile, the discipline of architecture was ranked as the 13th place in the national first-level disciplines by Ministry of Education.
In 2010, the discipline of architecture passed national assessment of vocational education of architecture again, and was approved by the Ministry of Education as one of special development majors and one of the pilot majors of the education training program for excellent engineers. Meantime, the discipline of architectural design and theory passed the national assessment of postgraduate education for master degree in architecture, and our college obtained the right to award professional master degree in architecture, and the master degree of engineering in architecture and civil engineering was approved as one of the national pilot professional degrees. In 2011, the architecture and urban & rural planning obtained first-level master degree programs respectively. At present, CAUP has 65 full-time teaching staff, among which 12 are professors and 22 are associate professors, accounting for 52% of total teaching staff. Also, CAUP has 3 PhD candidate supervisors and 51% of the teaching staff has PhD degrees.
The laboratory center of CAUP is composed of a laboratory center for building and city green environment technology, which includes acoustic, lighting and thermal physical environment laboratories, an architectural modeling laboratory, and a digital virtual reality laboratory (including an emulation laboratory, an engineering Laboratory training base, and a computer lab). CAUP has established good international cooperation’s with many world class universities and has carried out many international academic exchange activities; and has set up regular academic exchange and faculty members’ exchange, cooperative research, and international design workshops with University of Melbourne (Australia), Iowa State University (US), University of Cincinnati (US), Delft University of Technology (Netherland), Yonsei University (Korea), University of Toulouse (France), University of South Australia (Australia), University of Milan (Italy) etc. Meanwhile, our college has set up several foreign experts’ studios, and has accepted foreign students and sent out our postgraduate students and senior undergraduate students to these universities.
The education philosophy of CAUP is: “Scientific orientation, identifying targets, exerting advantages, characteristic education”. We are trying our best to build a high standard college of architecture and urban planning in China.
