Cultivation Characteristics

The Department of Urban and Rural Planning was established in 2002, the same year it became a Master's degree institution in urban planning. Undergraduate enrollment began in 2006. The program passed China's national accreditation for urban and rural planning education at both bachelor's and master's levels in 2014, 2018, and 2023, receiving an "Excellent" rating in 2023. In 2018, it gained the status of a doctoral degree institution in urban and rural planning, becoming the 14th university nationwide to hold this. In 2022, the major was selected as a National First-class Undergraduate Major Construction Site.

Over more than two decades' development, the discipline has established a complete training system of integrated bachelor's-master's-doctoral degrees. It is committed to cultivating well-educated innovative talents who are rooted in the capital, who serve the nation and possess a solid theoretical foundation, and who have strong practical and interdisciplinary skills.

Teaching Resources

Focusing on key scientific issues and major engineering challenges in urban and rural planning and development, and responding to the country's key strategic initiatives and major needs for industrial development, the program has established a robust system of research platforms. These include the Key Scientific Research Base of Safety Assessment and Disaster Mitigation for Traditional Timber Structures, the Key Research Base for the Preventive Conservation of Immovable Cultural Heritage Sites, the Beijing National Conditions Monitoring and Urban Assessment Research Center, the Beijing Urban Public Space Enhancement Research and Promotion Center, and the Urban Spatial Planning and Governance Research Center at BJUT. In addition, the program is supported by a practical training platform, which is the Beijing University of Technology Planning and Architectural Design Institute Co., Ltd. The major is recognized as a National First-class Undergraduate Major Construction Site.
