· BJUT Inventions Win Gold and Silver Prizes at the International Exhibition of Inventions in Geneva

In Geneva, Switzerland, the 48th International Exhibition of Inventions concluded. Two inventions by Vice-President & Professor Qiao Junfei's team at BJUT stood out: "Intelligent Detection Technology for Effluent Quality in Wastewater Treatment" won gold, while "Intelligent Optimal Control Technology for Wastewater Treatment Processes" won silver.

Both of these award-winning projects are from BJUT's Institute of Environmental Perception and Protection Automation, which Prof. Qiao Junfei created in 2008. The institute is the core team of the Beijing Key Laboratory of Computational Intelligence and Intelligent Systems, the Engineering Research Center for Intelligent Perception and Autonomous Control under the Ministry of Education, and the Beijing Laboratory of Smart Environmental Protection. Prof. Qiao's team is funded as a Creative Research Group by the National Natural Science Foundation (NSFC).

The Institute's mission is to investigate fundamental theories and key technologies in environmental protection automation and artificial intelligence. It focuses on machine learning, intelligent optimization and control, autonomous systems and other theoretical aspects, and their application in areas such as wastewater treatment, waste incineration, and air quality prediction. In recent years, the Institute has undertaken many high-level scientific research tasks including the Creative Research Groups by NSFC, NSFC Key Programs, National Key R&D Program, and National S&T Major Projects. The team has published over 100 papers in prestigious international journals and obtained over 50 invention patents from China and the United States. Its research outcomes have been applied in over 20 urban wastewater treatment plants across China, and have garnered various awards, including the Ministry of Education Science and Technology Progress Award (first prize), the Wu Wenjun Artificial Intelligence Science and Technology Award (first prize), and the National Science and Technology Progress Award (second prize).

Founded in 1973, the International Exhibition of Inventions in Geneva is one of the world's longest-running and largest displays of inventions. This year's event had over 800 exhibitors from 40 countries, with over 1,000 innovative projects on show.

Project Name: Intelligent Detection Technology for Effluent Quality in Wastewater Treatment

Introduction: The "Intelligent Detection Technology for Effluent Quality in Wastewater Treatment" addresses the global issue of real-time effluent water quality monitoring in urban wastewater treatment using cutting-edge approaches such as data mining and artificial neural networks. This technology offers real-time monitoring of effluent water quality parameters, such as phosphorus and nitrogen levels through procedural data collection and processing, characteristic variables acquisition, intelligent detection of characteristics, and online correction. 

Project Name: Intelligent Optimal Control Technology for Wastewater Treatment

Principal Inventors: Qiao Junfei, Han Honggui, Wu Xiaolong, Li Fangyu, Yang Cuili

Introduction: The "Intelligent Optimal Control Technology for Wastewater Treatment" allows for real-time decision-making and optimization of critical operating variables such as effluent aeration volume and dosing volume. It also ensures that the sewage treatment process fulfills total nitrogen and total phosphorus limits in the effluent while consuming the least amount of energy and treatment. This is accomplished through, among other things, procedural data collection and processing, variable correlation relationship analysis, key variable online evaluation, intelligent optimization of operating variables, and intelligent decision-making for process operation, among other elements.
