Students from College of Mechanical Engineering and Applied Electronics Technology Continued Success in National College Students’ Digital Design of Mechanical Products Competition

Under the auspices of the National Mechanical Discipline Teaching Steering Committee, the Finale of “2016 National College Students’ Digital Design of Mechanical Products Competition” was held in Wuchang on June 4th. The theme of this competition was ‘Machines Replacing People’ and the content is “Design of Transporting and Sorting Robots”. More than 1600 students from 81 colleges and universities including Xi’an Jiaotong University, Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Harbin Institute of Technology, Dalian University of Technology, Tianjin university, Tongji university, Beijing University of Science and Technology, took part in the competition and submitted over 550 works. After eight months, 95 works from 41 universities made it into the finale. After the defense and 4 hours’ design on-site, 20 first prizes, 30 second prizes and 45 third prizes were selected. With great honor, BJUT won 2 first prizes, 3 second prizes and 1 third prize and was highly appreciated by the competition committee.

The first prize work – ‘Man-machine of Apple Packaging’, was designed by Hou Jieran, Huang Yizhan and Zhang Yueze. They designed an assembly line as an opening runway and equipped it with apple sorting, loading box, gift box sealing and gift box transmission modules. It realized the automatic and efficient disposal of apples, the automatic filling of gift boxes and fully automatic production line.

Cao Mingguang, Liu Zhihao and Chang Bin’s “Book Sorting Robot”, winning the first prize as well, is mainly composed of two parts: the mobile module composed of the mobile platform and lift column, and finishing module consisting of rotating platform, mechanical arm and clip book arm. It realizes the automatic disposal and palletizing of books.

Wang Yan, Luo Qiang and Wang Shuai’s “Steel Pipe Cluster Machine”, winning the second prize, is used to automatically collect and organize the scattered piles of steel pipes on construction site. Considering the harsh environment of the construction site, the use of a unique four-degree of freedom nested axis mechanism in the design on flexibility, stability and balance of the robot, especially mechanical wrist, is a major highlight of this work.

Sun Yuan, Zhao Yaning and Yan Chaojie’s “Three Coordinate Finishing Handling Robot”, winning the second prize, is used in automated production lines. Its ingenious application of “swelling” grabs mechanism achieves automatic palletising of inner hole parts from disorder to order.

Qin Yu, Shi Ruoshui, and Li Zixu’s “Double Arm Loading Robot”, winning the second prize as well, adopts the design of double arms rotating structure, fixes two six axis robotic arms into 180 degrees in the rotation of the disk, and realizes uninterrupted clip package freight car through two manipulators, which contributes to improving transport efficiency. At the same time, the conveyor belts were used to deliver clip packages to further improve the transfer efficiency and ensure the safety of the parcels.

BJUT has participated in the National College Students’ Digital Design of Mechanical Products Competition for four years. And the degree of participation in the competition is getting higher each year. Students gain a lot through the competition. First of all, their personal design ability has been tempered and individual strict style of work has been trained systematically. Furthermore, each person’s experience of teamwork and role playing has been tested. Meanwhile, our exchanges with the brother college students also have been strengthened through a variety of platforms. Finally, they will be more confident to face all kinds of challenges in the future!
