The final of the 12th Chuangbo Cup National Undergraduate Embedded Design Contest in 2016 held by Beijing University of Technology on July 16 achieved a success. The entry “Smart Obstacle Avoidance UAV Flight Control System” won the Outstanding Award. It was designed by Yang Mingyu, Liu Mingshan and Li Xinwei, students of Beijing-Dublin International College at BJUT (class of 2013) majoring at Engineering of the Internet of Things.
This contest, sponsored by the National Computer Teaching Advisory Board under the Ministry of Education and Chinese Institute of Electronics, attracted more than 500 participation teams from over 200 universities. After strict selection from Henan Division, South China Division, Shaanxi Division, North China Division, Northwest Division, Northeast Division and Comprehensive Division, 100 teams got to the final at last. For Beijing-Dublin International College, it was the first time to participate in the contest and with the joint efforts of teachers, they achieved great success.
It is reported that the embedded technology is one of the core courses of Internet of Things Engineering. The final entry required to apply embedded technology to various applications, such as smart home, smart transportation, smart agriculture and smart city. The smart obstacle avoidance UAV flight control system will make the quad-rotor UAV achieve hovering at a fixed point and at a fixed height in the room. At the same time, the system helps the flight detect the obstacles ahead of it and avoid them when flying.
“We are a team. Yang Mingyu was responsible for the design and test of the UAV, the functions, the application, the test of every possible scheme. I was in charge of the communication between ground station and UAV at first and then worked with Yang to make the UAV multi-functional. Li Xinwei was dealing with the ground station data display.” Liu Mingshan said.
“I learned Linux,C++,QT design by myself for the contest, learn anything useful”, Li Xinwei said, “ I was baffled at the very beginning. I was new to the demo board. Thanks Professor Zhu Wenjun and Professor Liu Jianli, I really appreciated their help. During the contest, they helped me solve all kinds of problems arranging from the environment setup to code testing.”
Professor Liu Jianli from the Department of the Internet of Things Engineering of Beijing-Dublin International College said, “Three students applied what they learnt in the class into practice when they were designing and testing the system. Their understanding toward the Internet of Things has been deepened, the competence of analyzing and solving problems developed and their confidence and pride of this field strengthened.”
Beijing-Dublin International College always encourages students to participate in technological innovation activities. It sets up a resource-rich platform to guide them to learn, create and put into practice. The College will further establish an effective incentive mechanism to develop the intellectual resources and remove the restraints keeping students from scientific and technological innovation. It is expected to strengthen the innovative awareness and practical ability of their students, embody the teaching, ability training and quality development and educate the students a knowledgeable, eyes opened and systematic and logic person.
