BJUT Students Bagged the First-ever Gold Award in the 6th China International College Students’ “Internet+” Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition

The final of the 6th China International College Students’ “Internet+” Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition was held on Nov.18. the “Lighting Guard - Leader of Tunnel Intelligent Lighting System”, a well-selected project from BJUT, bagged the Gold Award. The members of the project team include He Lucheng, Gao Xiaojuan, Wang XiaoCong, Jiang Chuan, Zhang Zechao, Zhang Chengwei, Yuan Chike, Yu Aolin and Fan Xinxin, all of whom are from the Faculty of Architecture, Civil and Transportation Engineering. Their supervisors are Professor Hu Jiangbi and Professor Du Xiuli. The project won the first gold medal in the event for BJUT and also for Beijing-affiliated colleges and universities.

The event is one of the most influential entrepreneurship and innovation feasts open to all students from any colleges and universities across the country, under the sponsorship of the Ministry of Education, the Office of Central Cyberspace Affairs Commission, the National Development and Reform Commission, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the Chinese Academy of Engineering, and the Chins National Intellectual Property Administration. A total of 6.31 million people from 4,186 universities and colleges across 117 countries and regions at home and abroad signed up for the competition this year. Eventually, among 1.47 million candidates, 453 projects shouldered above the rest and competed in the national final.

The road safety engineering research team from the Faculty of Architecture, Civil and Transportation Engineering at BJUT is committed to providing integrated solutions for tunnel lighting and safety for 15 years. Despite technological challenges in the field, they have developed three core products, covering professional tunnel lighting, monitoring of lighting performance, adaptive control, unsupervised operation, and touchless super remote control. In addition, the solution also offers comprehensive closed-loop software and hardware system for lighting, monitoring, regulation, and feedback. It effectively solves the problems of eye’s light adaptation and dark adaptation in the tunnel lighting environment as well as quality problems of light environment like dazzle and stroboscopic effect, ensures the safe operation. What’s more, it also lowers the energy consumption and operating costs of lighting, reduces lamp replacement and maintenance, lessens the risk and cost of construction and operation, mitigates the impact of construction on tunnel traffic, and thus balances energy consumption and operation safety. So far, the project has been successfully applied to more than 20 expressways and 135 super-long and long tunnels. Its system operates stably and has alow failure rate, without a single traffic accident. Also, it saves 10.23 million yuan per year by electricity cost. All in all, the project has generated social and economic benefits.
