Nie Zuoren Appointed Deputy Secretary of CPC BJUT Committee and President of BJUT

The Beijing CPC committee and the People's Government of Beijing Municipality has selected Nie Zuoren as the next Deputy Secretary of CPC BJUT committee and President of Beijing University of Technology. President Nie Zuoren will officially begin his term as BJUT's 11th president after the announcement meeting on January 12, 2021.

On January 12, BJUT announced the decision of the Beijing CPC Committee and the People's Government of Beijing Municipality to appoint and dismiss the Deputy Secretary of CPC BJUT Committee & President of BJUT. Wang Ning, member of the Standing Committee of the Beijing CPC Committee and the Secretary of the Working Committee of Beijing Municipal Education Commission; Wang Jianzhong, Deputy Director of the Organization Department of the Beijing CPC Committee; Zheng Jichun, Executive Deputy Secretary of the Working Committee of Beijing Municipal Education Commission; Zhao Yue, Director of the Division of Personnel for Political and Legal Education of the Organization Department of the Beijing CPC Committee; and Wang Yong, Director of the Division of Personnel of the Working Committee of Beijing Municipal Education Commission and Junior Counsel, attended the meeting. The meeting was presided over by Zheng Jichun.

Wang Jianzhong announced the decision of the Committee and the Government to appoint Nie Zuoren as the Deputy Secretary of CPC BJUT Committee & President in place of the predecessor Liu Gonghui. Liu Gonghui would be removed from his former posts of Deputy Secretaryof CPC BJUT Committee, standing committee member, committee member, and President of BJUT, and transferred to the position in the Standing Committee of Beijing Municipal People's Congress.

Liu Gonghui expressed his full commitment to and compliance with the organization's decision as well as his full support and warm congratulations to Nie Zuoren on the appointment. He said, despite his absence from the university from now on, he would remain a BJUTer and continue to contribute for BJUT's prospect. He firmly believed that BJUT would be guaranteed to present a satisfactory university for our nation's education cause.

Nie Zuoren expressed that he was honored to succeed Liu Gonghui as the Deputy Secretary of CPC BJUT Committee & President, which was a great responsibility and a honorable mission for him. He promised to be fully engaged in the university governance to ensure a good start for the 14th five-year plan, and live up to the expectations of the organization and the public.

Xie Hui, Secretary of CPC BJUT Committee, reviewed his memorable experience of working with Liu Gonghui for the past three years and eight months. He expressed his heartfelt gratitude to Liu for his dedication and contribution to BJUT. He expressed his firm support for the organization's arrangements. Xie said, Nie Zuoren has earned the public respect and support and was a very great choice for the position and also for the benefit of the university's future growth. As the Secretary of CPC BJUT Committee, Xie will cooperate with President Nie to prepare and implement the 14th five-year plan, optimize discipline reconfiguration during the 5th round of discipline assessment, and facilitate the university's role in serving Beijing's "Four Centers" plan.

Wang Ning said that the change of the Deputy Secretary of CPC BJUT Committee & President was a critical decision made by the Beijing CPC Committee according to the practical needs of university development and leadership building and also a milestonein the university's development. On behalf of the Beijing CPC Committee, he expressed his heartfelt thanks to the former President Liu for his hard work. He hoped that Nie Zuoren, along with Xie Hui, would work together with the leadership team and all faculty, staff and students to drive forward the prospect of BJUT. He hoped that all BJUTers would commit to their original aspiration and missions, strive to write a new chapter in university development, and make greater contributions to the economic and social growth of the capital and the nation's education cause.


Personal Profile of Nie Zuoren: Deputy Secretary of CPC BJUT Committee and President of BJUT

Dr. Nie Zuoren, Professor and President of BJUT, was born in Changsha City, Hunan Province in 1963. He is a CPC member, doctor, Professor, doctoral supervisor, and member of Chinese Academy of Engineering.

He obtained his Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering from Wuhan University of Technology in August 1983, Master's and Ph.D. Degree in Materials Science and Engineering from Central South University. He was a Visiting Professor in the University of Tokyo and Nagoya University, Japan, between September 2002 and March 2004. He worked as the Deputy Dean and Dean of the College of Materials Science and Engineering in BJUT consecutively. Since April 2013 he had served as the standing committee member of CPC BJUT committee, and the Vice President of BJUT. He was appointed as the Deputy Secretary of CPC BJUT Committee, and the President of BJUT in January, 2021.

He is a leading expert in the areas of refractory metallic powder metallurgy and aluminum alloys. He was awarded the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars, and the leading talent in the national "Ten Thousand Talents Program". He is also the recipient of several national awards including the National Labor Medal, National Outstanding Scientific and Technical Worker, etc. He has five times received the first or second prize of National Science and Technology Awards. He was elected as the member of China Academy of Engineering in 2017.

His academic services include the vice chair of Materials Division, Science and Technology Commission of Ministry of Education, vice chair of Materials Program Committee of Ministry of Education, Postgraduate Program Committee of the State Council Academic Degree Committee, Ministry of Education, and Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security, as well as the expert of Advanced Technology Programs of Ministry of Science and Technology. He serves as the vice chair of China Materials Research Society and chair of the Environmental Materials Branch. He is also in the editorial board of "Int. J. LCA" (Germany) in China region, and the Chinese member in the Global Alliance of LCA Center.

He oversees the overall University administrative affairs, and serves as the chair of University Academic Committee.
