Recently, the Project "Research and Demonstration of Advanced Biological Wastewater Treatment Technology", led by Prof. Zeng Wei from Academician Peng Yongzhen's team in the Faculty of Environment and Life, was approved by the Ministry of Science and Technology as one of the first batch of the National Key R&D Projects of China's 14th Five-Year Plan Period. The project aims to solve the technical problems of urban wastewater treatment in key watersheds, in order to enhance the balance of water cycle and to achieve the goals of carbon peaking and carbon neutrality.
This project forms part of the national guideline project of "The Comprehensive Management of Water Resources and Environment in major river basins such as the Yangtze River and the Yellow River". This is another major achievement of Academician Peng Yongzhen's team, following their having secured approved funds from the NSFC.
This project involved cooperation between BJUT and six other universities and research institutes, including Tsinghua University, Tongji University, The Research Center for Eco-Environmental Sciences of Chinese Academy of Sciences, Shandong University, Shanghai Jiaotong University and Beijing Forestry University, as well as three leading water service companies in the industry. This joint carrying out of S&T research on such a large scale is a remarkable breakthrough for BJUT, dealing as it does with advanced urban wastewater treatment and resource utilization.
