2023 New Year's Message from Secretary Jiang Zeting and President Nie Zuoren
As the bells ring in the New Year, the whole country is celebrating the year 2023. On behalf of the leaders of the CPC BJUT Committee, the University administration, and over 30,000 BJUT faculty members, staff, and students, we would like to extend our sincere greetings and best New Year wishes to all the BJUTers at home and abroad and to the people from all walks of life who care about and support the development of the University.
The year 2022 has been of extreme significance in the history of the Communist Party of China and the country. It will go down in history and be engraved in our memory. In 2022, faced with both a pandemic and a century of complex changes, a volatile international environment, and the arduous task of advancing reforms and development while maintaining stability, the whole Party and the Chinese people of all ethnic groups, under the strong leadership of the CPC Central Committee with comrade Xi Jinping at the core, rose to the challenges and forged ahead, making steady progress in various undertakings with strong determination, consistent measures, and intense focus.
We at BJUT did our level best to embrace, study, publicize and implement the guiding principles of the 20th CPC National Congress; we worked together and embarked on a new journey to comprehensively advance the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation through Chinese-style modernization. We hosted the "truly exceptional" Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics and Paralympics and witnessed Beijing becoming the first-ever "dual-Olympic city" in the world. We continued to improve pandemic prevention and control measures, resumed study, work and the hustle and bustle of everyday life. It's been a year full of hardships, but also one of precious memories. Under the strong leadership of the Beijing municipal government, all BJUTers studied and implemented the guiding principles of the 20th CPC National Congress and the 13th Beijing Municipal Party Congress. We carried out a special action plan for promoting safe, high-quality, steady, and satisfactory development,ending the remarkable year of 2022 with concrete actions and tangible outcomes.
In 2022, based on the principle of "safe development", we built a peaceful and even safer campus at a higher level by safeguarding the lives and health of all the faculty members and students. Putting the people and their lives above all else, CPC BJUT Committee prevented large clusters of Covid-19 infections. The emergency operations center operated around the clock and ad hoc Party organizations worked at the frontline. Party members and cadres participated in voluntary services; all faculty members and students lived a plain life and helped each other, fighting against the pandemic at BJUT speed and gracing the campus with numerous touching stories. By inspecting various security risks throughout the campus, we strove to fend off and defuse all kinds of crises, and promoted the University's governance through practice.
In 2022, we achieved our goal of higher-quality development under the framework of the Fourteenth Five-Year Plan and Double World-Class Initiative. The ranking of key BJUT disciplines reached a new high in the fifth round of national discipline evaluation, with twelve majors newly approved as national first-class undergraduate major construction points and nine majors as Beijing municipal first-class undergraduate major construction points. For the first time, we published a high-level paper in Science as the first author, and BJUT was selected as one of the top 50 universities of China in science and technology innovation. We introduced one Member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and one National Distinguished Faculty Member. The Environmental Protection Automation faculty team was selected into the second batch of Huang Danian-style faculty teams among the colleges and universities in China. We also had one more faculty member selected for the major talent project of the Ministry of Education; two faculty members granted by the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars and the fund at the same level; one faculty member granted by the National Excellent Young Scientists Fund. Four BJUT faculty members won the 2022 Beijing Municipal Award of Distinguished Faculty and Young Faculty in Higher Education. We won one Grand Prize, 11 First Prizes, and 5 Second Prizes of the Beijing Teaching Achievement Awards of Higher Education. Two supervisors and one team of the University were awarded as Beijing Outstanding Graduate Supervisors and Supervisors Team; 5 theses were awarded as excellent doctoral dissertations of Beijing; 7 achievements won the Beijing Science and Technology Award, one foreign scientist was awarded the Zhongguancun Award for International Cooperation, and the number of projects approved by the National Natural Science Foundation reached a new high.
In 2022, we mobilized everyone on campus in implementing various tasks. With a focus on the major task of our times: "What kind of capital should we build and how?", we opened a campus-wide course The Capital of China. We fully participated in and completed services for the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games, with multiple faculty members, staff and students honored by the CPC Central Committee, the State Council and the Beijing Municipal Government. We launched the construction of the first Dual Olympics Memorial Hallin Beijing-based universities to pass on the spirit of the Beijing Winter Olympics from generation to generation.
In 2022, we strove for the satisfaction of the faculty members, staff, and students and saw their sense of security, gain, and happiness on the rise. We continued to deepen reform comprehensively based on demand, established the College of Carbon Neutrality Future Technology and the Research Academy for Future Industries, and formulated implementation plans on carbon peak and neutrality, and urban renewal. Five new institutions, including the Grassroots-Level Party Building and Development Center, Cultural Development Promotion Center, International Development Promotion Center, Digital Development Promotion Center, and Science and Technology Development Promotion Center were established. We deepened the coordination between the University and the local government and accelerated the implementation of the "1+3+N" strategy. We implemented the requirements of the BJUT Talent Work Conference, deepened the reform of the system and mechanism for talent development, expanded the promotion channels for talented individuals, adopted an open competition mechanism to select the best candidates. To make our services more satisfactory to the faculty members and students, we improved the long-term mechanism for doing practical things and the procedure for handling cases promptly. Steady progress was made in building a one-stop information platform with the Rixin BJUT app being put into operation. We held the Science and Technology Conference to accelerate organized scientific research, built the BJUT transfer Center - Guanzhuang sharing service platform, and facilitated the commercialization of a large number of scientific and technological outcomes. Student Dormitory Buildings 3 and 4 were renovated for a better living environment. Guidance and services for employment and entrepreneurship were optimized. The percentage of graduates pursuing further studies reached a new high, and more satisfactory and high-quality employment was achieved by them.
The year 2022 has come to an end. The past three years have driven home the value of a normal life and the fleeting nature of youth. The power of life and our minds has kept us going, rendering every night of BJUT peaceful, and every morning bright, letting us march forward toward an even brighter future.
The year 2023 is the first year for fully implementing the guiding principles of the 20th CPC National Congress and is a crucial year for executing the 14th Five-Year Plan. Under the strong leadership of the municipal government and the CPC BJUT Committee, let us forge ahead with enterprise and fortitude to achieve the centennial goal of building a world-class university. In promoting the development of the capital in the new era, let us write a new chapter in BJUT's high-quality development, and wish the 12th Party Member Congress of BJUT achieves excellent results!
