On March 8, BJUT held the "14th Five-Year Plan" Discipline Development Conference. With the theme of "Cross-integration, Striving for Excellence, and High-quality Service for the New Demands of the Capital City's Development", the conference will accelerate the construction of high-level research universities, and is intended to deeply integrate into, and serve, the Capital City's development as International Center for Science and Technology Innovation.
Jiang Zeting, Secretary of the CPC Committee of BJUT, stressed in his speech that the University should focus on scientific and technological innovation. It should seize the major strategic opportunity of the construction of Beijing as a global sci-tech innovation hub. He also emphasized that BJUT should focus on international cutting-edge disciplines in science and technology, integrate into the national strategic scientific and technological strength, and promote the deep integration of disciplinary development and the construction of major scientific and technological infrastructures. He noted that BJUT should focus on key research directions and key underlying technologies to meet the needs of high-end technological industries. He also stated that the construction of high-quality disciplines is necessary for building BJUT into a world-class university.
President Nie Zuoren, a member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, summarized the University's achievements in discipline construction in recent years. He then analyzed the opportunities and challenges in discipline development. He also proposed an overall action plan for improving innovation systems and mechanisms and promoting the high-quality development of disciplines. He stressed that BJUT's first-class disciplines should play their catalytic role, and the University should make major advances based on the strategic needs of the country and the capital city. He stated that the University should focus on promoting carbon peaking and carbon neutrality strategy, urban renewal, artificial intelligence, and high-end think tanks. Additionally, the University should focus on using its disciplines as the means of coordinating talent training, teaching staff and scientific research.
Lei Chaozi, Director of the Department of Science, Technology and Informatization of the Ministry of Education, recognized in his speech the achievements of the University in recent years and its contribution to the economic and social development of the country and the capital city. He hoped that BJUT will focus on the major strategic needs of the country, make breakthroughs in significant original works and training of leading talent, and continue to promote practical applications of scientific and technological achievements.
Liu Chang'an, a member of the Working Committee of Beijing Municipal Education Commission and Deputy Director of the Beijing Municipal Education Commission, commented that in recent years, BJUT has fully realized its exemplary role in serving Beijing's "four centers" construction. He hoped that the University will focus on areas urgently needed for the economic and social development of the country and the capital city, strengthen the construction of emerging and interdisciplinary disciplines, and enhance its capacity for scientific and technological innovation.
