On March 8, the 1st BJUT-UCD Research Symposium officially started online. Nie Zuoren, President of BJUT, and Andrew Deeks, President of UCD, were present at the opening ceremony and delivered welcome speeches respectively. The opening ceremony was hosted by Guo Fu, Vice-President of BJUT, and Paul Fanning, International Dean China of UCD.
President Nie Zuoren extended a warm welcome and heartfelt thanks to all the experts, scholars and students who attended. He briefly introduced BJUT’s general profile and its history of exchange and cooperation with UCD in the past ten years, as well as the preparatory work for the symposium. He stated that the symposium, jointly planned by BJUT and UCD, aims to further solidify the strategic partnership between the two universities, enhance academic exchanges among the faculty and staff, and strengthen cooperation for two sides in the fields of scientific research and joint training of high-level talents. He hoped that all participants attending the symposium could push forward their research collaboration and engage actively and productively in this virtual gathering.
President Andrew Deeks thanked the Organizing Committee of the two universities for their preparations for the symposium and briefly reviewed the rapid development and remarkable achievements of Beijing-Dublin International College at BJUT in recent years. He also pointed out that the successful Sino-foreign cooperation in university operation provided a solid foundation and firm confidence for further strengthening our strategic partnership. Deeks claimed that the symposium has aroused the interest and enthusiasm of our teaching and research personnel in various disciplines. He hoped that the symposium would become a new milestone that expands the cooperation between the two universities from undergraduate cultivation to more comprehensive and higher level international cooperation.
Prof Han Xiaodong, Executive Deputy Director of Institute for Science and Technology Development at BJUT, and Prof Jiao Yubo,Vice-Dean of Graduate School at BJUT, gave their reports on the themes of “An Overview of Scientific Research at BJUT and Funding Opportunities for International Research” and “International Joint Talent Cultivation of Graduate Students in BJUT” respectively. Aine Moore and Dr. Colleen Thomas of the UCD Research accordingly made the theme speeches on “Ireland-China International Cooperation, Horizon Europe Funding Opportunities” and “Comprehensive Database of Worldwide Research Funding Opportunities”.
Six parallel sessions of the symposium will be held online from March 9 to March 12, 2021, covering the fields of Civil Engineering, Transportation & Architecture, Computer Science & Information Technology, Advance Manufacturing & Materials Science, Economics & Social Sciences, Bioengineering, Opto-electrical & Micro-electronic Engineering. More than 100 experts and scholars from the two universities will carry out in-depth cooperation and discussion on the research they are interested in.
