Just as every snowflake has its unique brilliance, every BJUT volunteer at the Beijing 2022 Olympic and Paralympic Games has his or her own unforgettable Olympic story. This is representative of the perfect fusion of the style of the University and the spirit of the Olympic Games. BJUTers have witnessed those wonderful and glorious moments and have contributed towards them using our professional skills and enthusiasm.
In October 2021, the first cohort of BJUT's volunteers took up their duties in the Beijing Olympic (Paralympic) Village. On November 20 to 21, over 200 BJUT volunteers participated in the pre-opening operational test, which was based on strict epidemic prevention and control. On January 23, 2022, a total of 422 volunteers from BJUT gathered together and entered the closed-loop management system. All the BJUT volunteers gave of their best in their different roles, all contributing to presenting to the world a simple, safe and splendid international sports event.
On January 4, Chinese President Xi Jinping inspected the preparations for the 2022 Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games in Beijing. At the Athletes' Village, Xi spoke to the operational and service team staff and volunteers, and praised their hard work. He called on the volunteers to work wholeheartedly and strengthen teamwork to ensure the Games services ran smoothly and to allow the Games participants to feel the hospitality of the Chinese people. Twenty-one staff and student volunteers from BJUT listened to President Xi Jinping's speech at the scene.
BJUT was the only university providing volunteer services in all types of venues, covering twenty-one service areas. President Xi's inculcation gave all the BJUT volunteers enormous encouragement, filling them with the enthusiasm to provide excellent service and to show the vigor of Chinese youth to the whole world.
A total of 120 faculty members, staff and students from nine BJUT faculties/colleges made up the BJUT Winter Olympic City Volunteers Team, which distributed 100,000 packages of materials for spectators. Each package was carefully checked and packed by the volunteers to ensure that spectators had a safe and first-class experience of the Games.
Based on the volunteers' needs, the University gave them the full active support required to guarantee their ability to deliver the highest possible standard of service for the Games. Xie Hui, Secretary of the CPC BJUT Committee, and Nie Zuoren, President of BJUT, came to the Olympic (Paralympic) Village to visit the volunteers and express their care for them.
BJUT developed a support plan for the volunteers which enabled them to live and work comfortably and productively in the Olympic (Paralympic) Village during the closed-loop management period, providing them with psychological counselors and prepared psychological care plans. The relevant faculties/colleges also held seminars for the volunteers, encouraging them to translate their knowledge into practice, enabling them to play their part to contributing to Beijing’s status as the first city in the world to have hosted both the Olympic and Winter Olympic Games.
During the Spring Festival in 2022, over 400 volunteers from BJUT celebrated the day while remaining at their posts. For many of them this was their first time away from home at this time of family reunion. However, in the Village they were not alone!
