In response to the call for a "high-tech Olympics", BJUT's research teams were actively involved in research and projects related to the Winter Olympics.
The in-kind production of the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics and Paralympics mascots "Bingdundun" and "Xue Rongrong" was undertaken by a team from BJUT's College of Art and Design. This team, led by Zao Lin, used sophisticated techniques such as 3D printing and internal painting to achieve a seamless shell with a realistic furry appearance for a model of "Bingdundun" which exactly matched the computer-generated image of the mascot. Their work was highly praised by the Olympic and Paralympic Committee.
The Bobsleigh and Luge Venue for the Beijing Winter Olympics is one of the most complex competition venues in terms of both design and construction. It is one of the most difficult of all the world's circuits for bobsleigh and luge events, and is the first to have been completed in China. The research group, led by Liu Zhansheng from the Faculty of Architecture, Civil and Transportation Engineering, BJUT, undertook the project "LOD500 Precision BIM Technology Demonstration Project Model for the Bobsleigh and Luge Venue for the Winter Olympics". They solved many technical problems, and their completed work won expert approval.
The National Speed Skating Oval, also known as the "Ice Ribbon", is the landmark venue in the Beijing competition zone and the only new skating venue built for the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics. A research team led by Prof. Lin Shaofu from the Faculty of Information Technology in BJUT, developed a system for it which features intelligent environment monitoring, plus data aggregation and sharing. The system encompasses the real-time collection, transmission, sharing and visual display of environmental data in various sections of the venue, helps carry out real-time monitoring and constant control of the venue's environmental status, and contributes to the high-quality viewing experience and fine management of the venue.
To serve the Beijing 2022 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games, the Faculty of Information Technology organized a Winter Olympics Class majoring in Computer Science and Technology in 2019. The class trained 25 interns that provided IT support during the test and official competitions of the Beijing 2022 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games.
