Objective:
The major of The Internet of Things Project is multifaceted for the computer industry in terms of demand for the development of national strategic emerging industries. It is committed to cultivating professionals for construction, application, maintenance and management of Internet of Things (IoT), and especially professionals in related network structures and communication protocols, software architecture and middleware, computing platforms, application development, projects in service design and development. The major engages students to become senior engineer and technical talents oriented towards innovation and application. With international perspective and competitiveness, they can adapt to the economic development and meet the needs of economic structure, serving national strategic emerging industries.
This program will provide students with a sound knowledge of electrical engineering and computer science, a solid foundation in wireless communications and computer networks, building an integrated knowledge system of IoT equipment, systems, networks and infrastructure and improve their skills in network design and planning of network of IoT sensors.
Curriculum:
Teaching forms of the major include class lectures, experimental operations, tutorial guidance, seminars and project assignments. Mathematical foundations would be consolidated in the first year. Fundamental theories of Electronics and computer technologies are taught in the second year. Core courses in electronics, computers and communication networks are offered in the third and fourth years.
The major of the Internet of Things Engineering is interdisciplinary. It combines electronic engineering and computer science, focusing on key technologies in the IoT infrastructure, such as Internet technology, wireless communications, sensors and cloud computing. Students of the major would start with basic theoretical training of circuits, gradually supplemented by practical applications and then followed by more complex training in systems, platforms and communication network technology. Additionally, students’ability to design, test, and debug in IoT applications with electronics and computer technology would be fostered to support extensive IoT applications.
Core courses: Electronic Circuits, Digital Logic, Computer Programming, Software Engineering, Computer Architecture, Operating Systems, Communication Theory, Digital Signal Processing, Computer Networks, Wireless Communications, Radio Frequency Identification, Sensor Networks, Microcontrollers, Embedded Systems.
Career:
The major of the Internet of Things Engineering is multifaceted for the computer industry in terms of demand for the development of national strategic emerging industries. With the rapid development of China's IoT industry and extensive application of its technologies, graduates of the major can engage in the development and maintenance of IoT technology; meanwhile, they can also obtain excellent job opportunities in many IT-related enterprises like the IBM (International Business Machines Corporationin the US), Intel Corporation and Microsoft Corporationin the US and large Internet service providers such as China Mobile Communications, China Telecom and other small and medium-sized enterprises.
Internationalized cultivation provides more opportunities for graduates to seek further studies. Graduates can choose their research fields of further studies at UCD, including computer science, electronics, project management, engineering management, digital research and simulation science. Furthermore, graduates may then continue to PhD studies in diverse areas.
